Die Stiftung Gedenkstätte Berlin - Hohenschönhausen ö.R. wurde im Jahr 2000 gegründet.
Ihre Aufgabe ist, die Geschichte des Haftortes Berlin - Hohenschönhausen und das System der politischen Justiz in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik zu erforschen und mit Ausstellungen, Veranstaltungen und Publikationen zu informieren, um zur Auseinandersetzung mit den Formen und Folgen politischer Verfolgung in der kommunistischen Diktatur anzuregen.
In der Gedenkstätte sollen auf den Innenseiten der Außenfenster Hitzeschutzfolien angebracht werden. Bei den betroffenen Fenstern handelt es sich um Verbundfenster, Kastendoppelfenster und Rauch- und Wärmeabzugsfenster. Diese Maßnahme dient dem Schutz vor direkter UV-Strahlung und Hitze.
Die ehemalige Untersuchungshaftanstalt steht seit 1992 mit allen Baulichkeiten der Gedenkstätte sowie dem Außenraum unter Denkmalschutz (Denkmalliste Nr. 09045867). Gemäß der Denkmalschutzbehörde gibt es Anforderungen an die Hitzeschutzfolie. Hitzeschutzfolien, UV-Schutzfolien
