Lentoradan kokonaispituus on noin 25 kilometriä, josta noin 24 kilometriä kulkee kahdessa erillisessä ratatunnelissa. Yhteyden tarkoituksena on lisätä kapasiteettia voimakkaasti kuormitetulla Pasila-Kerava-osuudella sekä tarjota suorat kaukojunayhteydet Helsinki-Vantaan lentoasemalle.
Ratasuunnittelun edellyttämät turvalaite-, sähkörata- ja vahvavirtaosaaminen hankitaan erikseen, kuten myös Lentoaseman arkkitehtisuunnittelu sekä hankearviointi.,
