We hebben het nodig als drinkwater, voor akkerbouw, in de veeteelt en in de industrie. In Nederland is meestal water genoeg, maar het is vaak ongelijk verdeeld en vervuild. Daarom is waterbeheer nodig. Waar te veel water is, voeren de waterschappen het af. Waar te weinig is, voeren ze het aan. Met vergunningen regelen ze het lozen van vervuild water. Ze zuiveren het rioolwater en onderhouden de waterkeringen.
