Scope overview

Supply of 3 Xray Blood Irradiators to replace 3 Gamma Irradiators. The X-ray irradiators operate within the Blood Supply directorate of NHSBT. Hospital Services teams operate from 14 departments that are based in NHSBT centres across England. Each unit provides a portfolio of irradiated products to Hospitals across England.

Treatment of red cells and platelets with irradiation prevents residual white cells from replicating inside immunosuppressed patients and significantly reduces the risk of these vulnerable patients developing Transfusion related graft vs host disease.
